MIRRORS

I'm a huge admirer of Yayoi Kusama's infinity mirror work and have seen most of her U.S. installations. A few years ago, I also visited Team Lab's installation in Palo Alto, which remains the most remarkable exhibit I’ve ever seen in terms of digital optical illusions. Recently, however, I’ve noticed that some infinity rooms cater heavily to selfie-takers, with static lights designed to enhance photos instead of the dynamic light shifts that enhance the experience. I haven’t created an infinity mirror room since Falling Snow at the Deer Lake Gallery in March 2016.

Over the years, I’ve created, exhibited, and sold many infinity mirror tables and wall-mounted pieces. These works, featuring a range of addressable LED and RGB lighting, have been displayed in numerous shows since 2010.

For the Luminescence Show in March 2016 at Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby, BC, Ron designed and funded an impressive infinity mirror room installation. Working alongside his brother John, they spent two weeks constructing false walls, positioning large mirrors, and installing LED strips to create the immersive experience. Steven Smethurst added custom LED programming, mimicking the effect of gently falling snow.

The installation was an immediate success, captivating visitors for the four months it remained on display. 

We can recreate an installation of the same caliber as those showcased in major galleries worldwide.

Fractal Blaster (2017)

This immersive installation features six video monitors set within a 5’ x 3’ horizontal box, projecting dynamic visuals through an infinity mirror. In one mode, the screens display swirling fractal animations stored in computer memory, creating a hypnotic, endless loop of vibrant colors and patterns. In interactive mode, a live video camera feed captures real-time selfies, integrating viewer reflections into the mirror system. This captivating blend of digital art and interactivity was exhibited at the 2017 Mini Maker Faire in Vancouver, inviting audiences to explore the convergence of self-perception and infinite reflection.

This striking 3-foot diameter sculpture combines futuristic technology with recycled materials to create a mesmerizing “cyborg” eye. Made from a recycled Union 76 gas station spherical aluminum sign, this piece features Arduino-controlled LEDs and a laser, all incorporated into an infinity mirror for a captivating, high-tech effect. First exhibited at the ReVision: The Art of Recycling show on Granville Island, Vancouver, in June 2012, the Giant Cyborg Eyeball makes a powerful statement on surveillance and our relationship with technology.

This captivating infinity mirror transforms a 4-foot-long retail neon “Open” sign into a visual experience of endless reflection. The word “OPEN” repeats into infinity, inviting viewers to consider the limitless possibilities that lie beyond our everyday perceptions. A thought-provoking fusion of light, depth, and reflection, Open was exhibited at the 2017 Luminescence show at Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby, where it encouraged audiences to look beyond life’s perceived limited dimensions and open themselves up to the infinite possibilities before them.

The Electric Orgasm is a captivating infinity mirror installation featuring dense LED neon strip lighting, programmed to operate in two distinct modes. In standby, it emits a slow, pulsating glow, while in interactive mode, motion sensors trigger a rapid, pulsating light sequence that mimics the intensity of an orgasm, lasting for about a minute. The piece is an equilateral triangle, measuring 55” x 55” x 55” inches, creating a mesmerizing visual effect through its mirrored surfaces and lighting.

This work was showcased at the 2018 Seattle Erotic Art Festival and the Luminescence Show at Burnaby's Deer Lake Gallery that same year. Inspired by Suzy Kellems Dominik’s Orgasming Vagina at Art Basel Miami, The Electric Orgasm explores themes of sensuality and human experience through the medium of light and reflection.
